Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu admits contacting Suarez BEFORE the World Cup…
Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has admitted to speaking to Luis Suarez without Liverpool’s permission before the World Cup got under way, and before a feee was agreed between the two clubs, the Mirror reports.
After the tournament, Barcelona agreed to pay £75m for the Premier League’s best player, and Liverpool eventually decided to cash in on their prized asset.
“When we approached Suarez, it was before the World Cup,” Batomeu admitted.
“We told him that he had the right age. He had the experience. Playing at Liverpool give him incredible performance also. And it was the right time for him to come to our club, to Barcelona.
“We knew from a lot of lot of years ago that Luis Suarez likes our club, likes our city. And we have the advantage. His agent is Pep Guardiola’s brother… He’s from Barca in his heart, also, so everything was perfect and created the perfect atmosphere that Luis Suarez accepted. And we know that he had better offers than our offer but he came to Barcelona.”
Suarez is currently banned from all forms of football until the end of October, because he bit defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay’s fixture with the Italians at the World Cup.
Naturally, rumours are now circulating that following the discussions with Barca, the bite was a premeditated act to force a move away from Liverpool, who had already been forced to deal with Suarez’s ban for racism and subsequent bite on Branislav Ivanovic.
