Former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has backed the club’s new British record signing Angel di Maria to be a success at Old Trafford, report the Express, with the Real Madrid star speaking upon being awarded the title of ‘Europe’s best player’ by UEFA.
Ronaldo was one of a seris of high profile players to wear the number seven shirt at Old Trafford, along with the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham, and has backed di Maria to do his new shirt number justice:
“I wish Di Maria well. He is a fantastic player who will do well at Old Trafford.”
“I believe only the best wear the No.7 jersey.”
Di Maria has arrived at Old Trafford for a British world record transfer fee of almost £60 million and will be looking to emulate club greats such as Ronaldo in adding pace and creativity to a United side that has looked pedestrian and frustrating during the season so far, reaching a nadir during the shock midweek defeat to Milton Keynes Dons in the League Cup.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, will be looking to follow up the explosive 2013/14 season that saw him awarded the ‘Best Player in Europe’ award thanks to 17 goals in 11 European appearances, with the Portuguese flyer having started well with a fine long range strike in Real’s opening La Liga victory over Cordoba.
