The Reds were desperate to bring the Brazilian-born striker to Anfield at the start of last season and the club even lodged a £21m offer for the Atletico man after he impressed manager Brendan Rodgers.

Costa scored 10 goals in La Liga the previous season and the Reds’ move was seen as a something of a surprise, especially with Luis Suarez already on the books.

And Rodgers’ interest was justified after he bagged a further 35 goals for the Spanish giants as they marched on to an unprecedented La Liga title last term.

And Costa revealed that a move to Liverpool was on the cards only to see it fall through as he was not willing to leave the Vicente Calderon at the time.

He said: “I was close to leaving, Liverpool are a great team.

“But after fighting so hard and overcoming difficulties to get my place at Atletico, how could I leave?

“I thought it was very important to keep growing at the Colchoneros [Atletico Madrid], and play here for many years.”
