The 28 year old has been one of the most consistent defensive performers in the Premier League over the past 18 months and well deserves a new deal and has more than repaid the £7m invested in his services back in 2012.
The England international is expected to put pen to paper on a new long term deal and follows keeper Thibaut Courtois and full-back Cesar Azpilicueta in this regard, both of whom have signed new five year contracts in recent days.
Cahill has made 114 appearances for Chelsea and is now the firm favourite of Mourinho’s and a regular centre-back partner for veteran skipper John Terry.
The former Aston Villa man is now also a dependable regular for Roy Hodgson’s national team set-up.
