North London rivals both vying for highly-rated defender.Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur could be set for a January transfer battle to sign highly-rated Swiss defender Fabian Schar from FC Basel, according to the Daily Star.
The Gunners are in particular need of strengthening at centre-back this season, with Arsene Wenger having failed to sign a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen after selling him to Barcelona during the summer transfer window.
Calum Chambers, a summer signing from Southampton, can fill that role but is currently being used as a right-back to cover for the injured Mathieu Debuchy, who could be out for some time.
Schar is an excellent prospect and has been linked with a number of top clubs before, and Arsenal will now hope to beat their north London rivals to his signature when the transfer window re-opens.
However, Spurs also want to improve at the back after an inconsistent start to the season, despite Mauricio Pochettino already spending big on new defensive signings such as Eric Dier and Federico Fazio during the summer.
Schar would make another good addition to the Tottenham squad as they look to keep building for a challenge to finish in the top four this term.
