In an interview with the Chelsea website, Kurt Zouma has revealed that his first name was inspired by Jean-Claude Van Damme’s character in the 1989 film “Kickboxer”.

“In the film, he helps everyone and is super strong. So my parents decided that if they gave me that name I’d be hard and always have a smile.” Zouma, who is only nineteen, is certainly hard, and his tough-tackling, high-jumping style wouldn’t look out of place in an action film.

Even better than his first name is his middle name: “Happy”. He will be living up to it this week after scoring against Bolton in the Capital One Cup on his full debut for Chelsea.

Zouma will be hoping that he lives up to to the standards set by other footballers named after celebrities, like Cristiano Ronaldo (Ronald Reagan) and Lionel Messi (Lionel Richie).
