The immensely talented youngster, formerly of City’s fierce local rivals Manchester United, has long been linked with a return to the Premier League since starring in Serie A, though it has previously been reported that he would command a transfer fee of around £60m.
However, his asking price now appears to have been slashed by Juventus, with City now hoping to lead the charge for his signature as they seek a top class signing in midfield.
Barkley has recently been touted as Manuel Pellegrini’s priority target in that position, but the Premier League champions have been put off by his rumoured £50m price tag.
This certainly seems a lot to be paying for the relatively unproven England starlet, with Pogba looking far better value for money at just £25m.
It may be that the French international is being targeted with the view of being a long-term replacement for Yaya Toure, whose form has dipped considerably this season despite being immense for the club last term.
