The Blues are readying a pre-contract offer to the German international this January, in a move which would see them complete his signing for the start of next season.
Jose Mourinho is known to be keen on bringing the experienced Bernabeu star to Stamford Bridge, having worked closely with him during his time in charge at Real.
Arsenal are thought to be trying an £11m deal to sign Khedira this January, but it is understood that the player’s wages may still be a stumbling block in any deal to bring him to the Emirates Stadium.
This will put Chelsea in the driving seat to snap up the 27-year-old, with Mourinho looking like building a superb squad at Stamford Bridge with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic and Ramires already to choose from in that position.
Arsenal are in need of defensive midfielders but may now have to look elsewhere, while Manchester United have also been mentioned as suitors for Khedira who could be dealt a blow to their transfer plans here.
