The 26-year-old was in fine form this week as he scored in CSKA’s surprise win away to Manchester City in the Champions League, and his performances seem to have impressed Reds manager Brendan Rodgers.
The Northern Irishman is in need of more firepower upfront after the highly disappointing displays of £16m summer signing Mario Balotelli at Anfield so far, with the sulky Italian international not looking like being the striker the club need to replace Luis Suarez.
Doumbia has looked good in the Russian top flight and in the Champions League, and could make an improvement upfront for Liverpool if they get him this January, though Serie A side Napoli are also said to be interested.
The Ivory Coast international has a release clause of £30m in his contract at the moment, though it is expected that the Reds would open with a £15m bid to test his club’s resolve to keep him.
Napoli’s search for a striker may also suggest that Liverpool could have some luck in their bid to sign Gonzalo Higuain from the Italians.
