The 23-year-old has barely featured for the club he joined all the way back in 2007 as a youngster, though he has shown some fine form with loan side Rayo Vallecano this season.

This had prompted speculation that the Frenchman could work his way into Jose Mourinho’s plans, but the player himself admits he is in the dark over his future at Stamford Bridge.

Kakuta would have plenty of competition for places ahead of him at Chelsea, with the Blues currently looking like one of the strongest squads in Europe with some superb attacking talent already in their ranks.

It has become common for Chelsea to sign up youngsters on the cheap before then sending a large number of them out on loan, many of whom never go on to play for the club but are sold at a profit.

Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne are recent examples of this, and Kakuta may be the next victim of this strategy.
