The big German has looked increasingly vulnerable this season but that could be put down to the lack of a regular partner in central defence after Koscileny’s chronic achilles issues. However, is the vice-captain of the side and the calm leader his teammates look to when the going gets tough.

The Frenchman’s absence has been keenly felt throughout this season. Arsene Wenger’s inexplicable transfer blunder, to not sign a competent and experienced back up central defender looks all the worse considering Koscielny’s achilles woes.
Still the side’s best and most reliable defender, Arsenal have to hope he has more luck with injuries in the coming months if they want a more robust defensive record.
