The 20-year-old has been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in recent weeks, and doubts had been increasing over his future at Anfield. He has reportedly turned down a new contract worth £70,000 a week.

The Merseyside club can’t afford to lose the England international just six months after they sold Luis Suarez. The repercussions of selling another top class player could be huge for the side.

“He is a real talisman for this team. He has been a great example of the progress that a lot of the players have made here. He has gone from a youth team player to one of the top young players in European football,” Rodgers told reporters.

“The club, I am sure, will work very hard (on his contract) and Raheem is happy here, he loves being a Liverpool player,” he added.

The winger has also been in the news recently for missing several chances while up front against Manchester United in the Reds’ 3-0 loss to their fierce rivals.

This continued the poor form of the team as a whole which has left them in the bottom half of the table going in to the Christmas fixtures.
