Things have been unsettled at St James’ Park ever since Alan Pardew announced his decision to quit as boss on Sunday, with the Englishman looking likely to take charge at Crystal Palace.
Since this announcement was made speculation about the future of many of Pardew’s staff and key players has been rife and the Gunners were hoping to use this period of uncertainty to land Sissoko for a cut-price fee.
The France international has been a key figure under the 53-year-old and may well be tempted by a switch to the Emirates Stadium – especially now the man who brought him to English football is departing.
Sissoko signed for the Magpies in the summer of 2013 from Toulouse for just £1.8m, but has seen his stock greatly rise since then due to his performances for club and country.
Arsene Wenger has admitted that a midfielder remains his priority in the January transfer window should the right offer present itself and the Frenchman has already signed Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle in the past six months.
