Middlesbrough To Sign Chelsea Defender On Loan After Bundesliga Spell Fails

Championship high flyers Middlesbrough will look to beat Queens Park Rangers to the signing of Czech Republic international central defender Tomas Kalas on loan from Chelsea this week, report the Mail, with Kalas set to return from a loan spell with Cologne in the Bundesliga due to a lack of playing time.

Kalas rose to prominence at the back end of last season when he put in an accomplished performance for Chelsea as they won 2-0 at Liverpool to cost the hosts the Premier League title – but he was back in the reserves by the end of the season and shipped out on loan to Cologne by Jose Mourinho this summer.

The newly promoted Bundesliga outfit have been reticent to give Kalas regular playing opportunities, however, which has led to his return to England and a two way fight for his signature on loan until the end of the season.

Middlesbrough, who are managed by Mourinho’s former Real Madrid assistant Aitor Karanka and flying high at the top of the Championship, appear to be favourites to sign Kalas, but Harry Redknapp’s QPR are also interested in the Czech centre back, who is running out of time to prove that he has a long term future at Stamford Bridge.
