Arsenal scouted centre-back on Tuesday night.

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a heavy blow in their chase for Espanyol centre-back Hector Moreno after Arsenal sent scouts to watch the defender player against Valencia.

Ex-Reading and Leeds boss Brian McDermott, now a scout for the North London club was at Espanyol on Tuesday evening to rule the roost over the Mexican centre-back and determine where the Gunners should target the 26 year old, reports Daily Mail.

Moreno has thought to have attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham, Swansea, Everton and Hull and Arsene Wenger is the latest suitor for the heavily capped international as he continues his search for suitable cover in defence following a host of injuries to key personnel this season.

Wenger will have to compete with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino first however, who has personal experience working with Moreno during his time as Espanyol boss.

And the defender would have already joined White Hart Lane this summer had he not broken his leg during the World Cup – an injury that’s restricted him to just five appearances this term.

However, Moreno is now fully fit and his signature could be a hotly contested fight between the two North London clubs in the January window.
