Gunners legend has surprise favourite from current crop.
Former Arsenal star Robert Pires has a somewhat surprising choice as his favourite player from the current Gunners squad, the Daily Mail reveals.
The Frenchman singled out Spanish playmaker Santi Cazorla as the team’s star man, ahead of big-money signings such as Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
Cazorla recently shone as a stand-out performer for Arsenal in their surprise 2-0 win away to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, scoring one and setting up the other after controlling the midfield throughout.
Pires has been impressed by the performances of the former Malaga man, whom he also played alongside at their former club Villarreal a few years ago.
Speaking about Arsenal’s activity in the transfer market, Pires defended under-fire manager Arsene Wenger for his signings, pointing out what a success Cazorla had been in the Premier League since he joined the club in the summer of 2012.
“I wouldn’t say Arsenal have made any mistakes in the transfer market. If you play for Arsenal, it means you have some quality,” he said.
‘To me, Arsenal’s best signing is Santi Carzola. Fans love Alexis Sanchez, and so do I; he’s quick to adapt to the Premier League – but Cazorla is so important. For the last few months, he’s been our best player.”
