Reports in the Daily Star believe that Louis van Gaal’s side will submit an offer in the region of £60m for the Uruguayan, who has fallen out of the favour with the French champions after a row with manager Laurent Blanc.

The 27-year-old has received plenty of interest from Europe’s biggest clubs over the last year, including United, who attempted to sign Cavani during David Moyes’ time at Old Trafford, even sending chief executive Ed Woodward to investigate a possible deal.

Twelve months on, and Van Gaal remains interested in reviving the deal. A source close to the United chief said: “Edinson Cavani has been targeted as the big-name striker the club wants and United are confident of pulling it off.

“He has not settled in Paris and is looking for a new challenge at another big club, so United fit the bill.”
