“For the first two years we didn’t have the possibility to change the momentum of a game – this year we plainly do,” said Rodgers to Sky Sports.
“It’s so important in the modern game to have a bench that can come on and affect the game. That happened, which was great.”
After coming so close to clinching their first Premier League title last season, Rodgers understandably came under criticism following a slow start to the current campaign.
The Merseyside club spent over £100m on new players last summer to compensate for the £75m departure of Luis Suarez, and for much of the early part of the season, it appeared that the transfer policy had cost Liverpool another chance at the title.
The biggest flop was widely considered to be Suarez’s replacement, Mario Balotelli. The £16m man has struggled since moving back to the Premier League from Italy but his winning goal against Tottenham in their last league game may suggest that he is starting to turn a corner.
And it is not just Balotelli who appears to be finding his feet.
The defence has been bolstered by recent good performances from fellow new signing, Emre Can, while Raheem Sterling has had arguably his best season at the club, already returning nine goals in all competitions.
While only currently seventh in the table, no league defeat since mid-December suggests that Rodgers’s confidence in his current squad may be justified.
