Top of his big money targets appears to be Liverpool contract rebel Raheem Sterling, with the 20 year old England man rated by this source at £50m.

The Metro believe the Old Trafford side’s push to sign this trio will be part funded by the sale of Angel di Maria and therefore one imagines van Gaal sees Sterling as a like for like replacement for the Argentine, though one has to wonder whether Liverpool would consider selling their prized asset to their arch rivals.

Borussia Dortmund defensive rock Mats Hummels is another Man United target with a £35m price-tag on the World Cup winner.

Van Gaal’s side have had issues at the back and the Bundesliga star would represent an improvement on the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans.

The final member of this trio comes in the form of PSV Eindhoven attacker Memphis Depay, a player van Gaal knows well from his time in charge of the Dutch national team set-up.

Depay is in the middle of a superb season, the speedy wide-man topping the Eredivisie goal-scoring charts, helping PSV Eindhoven to a big lead at the top of the table.

The Daily star rates the 21 year old at a very affordable £20m.
