Liverpool have set their sights on a move for Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic, according to reports in Italy.
FC Inter News claims the Reds will test the resolve of the Serie A outfit when the summer transfer window opens, despite being deemed ‘unsellable’ by Inter head coach Roberto Mancini.
Mancini’s high opinion of his young charge could put any move to Merseyside in doubt.
Despite being blessed with creative players like Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana, Liverpool are said to be ready to part with £21.7million to land the 20-year-old, who has been an ever-present this term.
He has made 33 appearances for Inter since the start of the campaign, and has scored on five occasions. He still has four years remaining on his present deal.
Liverpool, last season’s Premier League runners-up could have a large transfer budget if they decide to cash in on England forward Raheem Sterling.
Versatile attacker Sterling has two years left on his contract but has so far refused to extend his deal and could attract offers of around £50m this summer.
While fifth-placed Liverpool are unlikely to be able to offer Kovacic Champions League football next season, Inter are even further off the pace in their division, as they currently sit in ninth position in Serie A.
