The 32-year-old former Tottenham and West Ham striker waved to the crowd, but received a torrent of boos in return at the Newcastle leg of the WWE UK tour.

On Sunday Defoe scored a remarkable winner against Newcastle to hand bragging rights to Black Cats fans for the fifth time in a row following the derby. Maybe organisers will now question the wisdom behind parading a Sunderland striker in such close proximity to the game.

The explosive striker moved back to the Premier League following a short spell at Toronto FC in the MLS. His goal against Sunderland’s hated rivals was his third for the Black Cats, as he aims to help them to survival in the top flight.
