The Spaniard, who has 12 months remaining on his deal at Serie A outfit Napoli, has been in talks with the Italians over his future at the club.

He retains a cult following among sections of the Anfield faithful, and a plane carrying a banner calling for his reinstatement was even flown over the stadium at the weekend.

Rodgers finds himself under pressure after seeing his side crash out of the FA Cup at the semi-finals stage against relegation-threatened Aston Villa, while Champions League qualification via a top-four finish in the Premier League remains only a remote possibility.

The bookmakers believe outgoing Borussia Dortmund head coach Jurgen Klopp is the most likely replacement for the Northern Irishman if he does depart Merseyside, with the German as short as 3-1 in some quarters.

Ajax chief Frank de Boer is next in the reckoning at 6-1, although he, like Benitez, still has another 12 months to run on his contract when the season ends.

Benitez comes next at either the same or a slightly longer price, but the protest by fans asking for him to return to the position he left five years ago could see a flood of money placed on the 55-year-old in the coming days.
