The Anfield side are seemingly resigned to losing want-away England man Raheem Sterling and have identified the Argentine international as an ideal replacement.

The 24 year old’s representatives have flown into England to finalise terms ahead of a big money move this summer, the Benfica star is said to have a £42.6m release clause written into his contract.

Salvio has played a key role in helping his Estádio da Luz side to retain their Primeira Liga title, netting 13 goals in all competitions this term.

Portuguese source Abola also claim Liverpool have an interest in Salvio’s club and national team colleague Nicolas Gaitan with Brendan Rodgers keen to strengthen his Anfield attack.

Gaitan has been at Benfica since 2010 and has often been linked with a move to the Premier League and may now be ready for a fresh challenge.

The fact that Liverpool do not have the carrot of Champions League action to offer as motivation for moves to capture top talents makes this double swoop a little hard to fathom.
