The Dutchman, who was a big success at the Nou Camp, first caught the eye of a number of European giants whilst at Ajax, where he led a youthful team to Champions League glory and brought through some of the most talented players in the world who went on to play for other big clubs.

Van Gaal is now at Old Trafford after replacing David Moyes last summer, and has done well in his first season with the club, steering them back into the top four, though failing to win any silverware.

According to Goal.com, things could have gone quite differently for LVG, who was wanted for the big job at the Bernabeu back in the day, though he supposedly preferred the climate in Catalunya.
