According to the Daily Star, a senior figure at United confirmed that they were interested in signing the Southampton star, but suggested that no offer was yet on the table.

“Yes, we are interested in Morgan but no deal is imminent,” the insider said.

The Star suggest that it could take a bid of around £25m to secure a deal for the France international, who is also wanted by Arsenal, according to the Daily Mirror. However, the fee could change if the Saints decide to follow up their interest in striker Javier Hernandez and attempt to engineer a swap deal, the Star report.

But any move for the 25-year-old will be reliant on whether United have any luck in trying to sign their main target Schweinsteiger. According to the Star, Louis van Gaal – who worked with the German captain when he was manager of the Bundesliga side – is keen to add the 30-year-old, and will try to tempt Pep Guardiola into selling with a £10m offer.

Both players would add a steel to the United midfield that has sometimes looked vulnerable defensively. While Schneiderlin is the emerging talent of the game, Schweinsteiger has accomplished everything, and thus would bring a much needed level of experience to an United side in transition.
