The 29-year-old only joined the Blues last summer, but has struggled to get in to the first team at Stamford Bridge. Cesar Azpilicueta, despite being originally being signed as a right-back, has been holding down the position ahead of the Brazilian and is clearly a favourite of manager Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese claimed last year that a team made of 11 versions of the Spaniard would win the Champions League, according to the Daily Mail.

After this season of disappointment it seems that Luis could be interested in a return to La Liga. With his current deal at Stamford Bridge running until 2017, it could take a fee similar to the £15.8 million that the BBC reported was spent on him last summer by the Blues.

The left-back is currently at the Copa America with his national team, and told journalists: “It’s difficult to talk about my future because I do not really know what will happen. I have a contract with Chelsea and I belong to the club, so it’s up to them.”

If either of the Madrid rivals do manage to sign Luis they will be getting a top class player, albeit one who may be rusty after only starting nine times in the Premier League last season. The 29-year-old was a key part of Atleti’s La Liga win and run to the Champions League final in 2013/14.
