The Red Devils are in serious danger of losing their 24-year-old number one after The Sun reported that the player is willing to hand in a transfer request to force a transfer to the Bernabeu. As such it would seem that manager Louis van Gaal has already pinpointed who he wants to replace the Spain international, and is looking at a former charge to do so.
Dutch journalist Mike Verweij said: “I think if David de Gea does indeed go to Real Madrid, Manchester United signing Jasper Cillessen will come true.”
Cillessen was between the sticks for the Netherlands in their brilliant run to the semi finals of the World Cup last summer with the 63-year-old at the helm. This could have helped him to win a transfer to Old Trafford to work with his former manager, despite being controversially substituted for Tim Krul before their penalty shootout against Costa Rica in the quarter-finals.
The 26-year-old also impressed for Ajax last season, helping them to second in the Eredivisie with 12 clean sheets in all competitions. This won’t have hurt his chances of being chosen as a replacement for De Gea should one be needed.
