Manchester United facing Real Madrid competition for former Louis van Gaal charge

Manchester United are facing competition from Real Madrid for the signature of Sergio Romero, reports the Daily Express.

The 28-year-old is currently a free agent after being let go by Sampdoria at the end of last season. Both the Red Devils and Roma have been in contact with the Argentina international’s agent Mino Raiola, but with the Premier League side able to offer far higher wages for his services, it is likely that they are favourites to sign the player.

United are keen to sign the goalkeeper as a potential replacement for David De Gea, who has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid [MARCA]. However, they would prefer to sign Ajax star Jasper Cillessen [talkSPORT], potentially leaving the Argentina international clear to move to the Bernabeu.

With the stopper having never been hugely successful at the highest level, it is likely that he could be a new backup ‘keeper for Los Merengues. Current reserve goalie Keylor Navas has been linked with Liverpool this summer [Metro], and also suffered an ankle injury recently which could mean a replacement is needed whether he goes or not.

Romero worked with current United boss Louis van Gaal during his time at AZ Alkmaar. However, he only played 12 times for Sampdoria last time round, and with that being for a team that finished seventh in Serie A it doesn’t inspire confidence in the ex-AS Monaco man. Although, he did look reliable in the World Cup last summer.
