West Ham join race to sign £15m Tottenham attacker

West Ham will battle Newcastle United, Sunderland and Aston Villa in pursuit of Tottenham winger Andros Townsend, according to the Daily Star.

The 24-year-old has impressed when on England national team duty but is a far less consistent performer at club level and this led to Mauricio Pochettino only handing the wide-man ten Premier League starts in 2014/15. The winger hasn’t featured at all so far this season.

Pochettino has successfully offloaded a host of under-performing members of his Tottenham squad this summer, and the Daily Star claim the North London side want £15m for Andros Townsend.

Tottenham have sold midfielders Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Benjamin Stambouli and Lewis Holtby as well as defenders Vlad Chirches and Younes Kaboul and flop forward Roberto Soldado so far during the summer window.

Townsend has been on Spurs’ books since the age of nine, and made his debut for the club in January 2011. He has been sent out on nine separate loan spells, but hasn’t yet convinced that he can be a regular first-team contributor at the club, unlike his teammate Harry Kane.

The cultured attacker has made just 22 Premier League starts and a move away could afford Townsend the regular first-team action he needs at this point in his career.
