Per Mertesacker urges Arsene Wenger to bring forgotten star back to Arsenal

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has urged manager Arsene Wenger to bring Wojciech Szczesny back to the club once his loan spell with Roma comes to a close, the Daily Star reports.

The Polish international is currently spending the season with the Serie A giants following Petr Cech’s summer arrival from Chelsea.

Szczesny didn’t enjoy the greatest of seasons last term, and lost his place to deputy David Ospina midway through the campaign, and following Cech’s arrival the 25-year-old slipped even further down the pecking order at the club.

Roma are reportedly keen to keep Szczesny beyond the end of the season, but Mertesacker has underlined the importance of bringing him back.

“The team wants him back – that’s good for him,” the former Germany international said.

“He’s shown great character already in this team and I think he has got a bright future.”

Mertesacker added: “Wojciech wants to compete. I think he’s a good goalkeeper and he can still develop.”
