Tottenham player ratings from 2-0 Leicester win: Kane replacement and stand-in captain star performers

Posted by

Tottenham Hotspur finally got the better of Leicester City this season to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-0 victory at the King Power Stadium.

Spurs had failed to beat the Foxes in their three previous meetings this term, but goals from Son Heung-Min and Nacer Chadli either side of the break saw them progress.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will face Colchester United next weekend for a place in the last 16. Here, CaughtOffside rates how his players fared tonight in the Midlands…

GK: Michel Vorm – 7/10

Has not always convinced when deputising for Hugo Lloris this season but was error free and made good saves from Demarai Gray and Marc Albrighton.

RB: Kyle Walker – 8/10

Wore the captain’s armband this evening and did it justice. A constant outlet down the Spurs right while also being responsible and strong defensively.

CB: Eric Dier – 7/10

The 22-year-old has started 44 of Tottenham’s last 48 games, but not many at centre-back. Yet he slipped back into his natural role with relative comfort.

CB: Kevin Wimmer – 7/10

Wimmer has had three defensive partners in his five Spurs appearances this season but did not let that bother him. Made a couple of important tackles on the cover.

LB: Ben Davies – 6/10

Sometimes had a difficult time with ex-Swansea City teammate Nathan Dyer, and was caught a little narrow as Leicester created a couple of late chances on his flank.

CM: Nabil Bentaleb – 6/10

Completing 90 minutes was the most important thing for the Algerian, whose season has been ravaged by injury. Occasionally appeared rusty as he lost the ball in key areas.

CM: Tom Carroll – 7/10

Passed well and often forward, including a positive ball which led to Son’s goal. Might not have done enough to keep his place for the weekend, with Mousa Dembele fit again.

AMR: Erik Lamela – 6/10

Not one of his best performances of the season. The Argentine’s work rate was as admirable as ever but nothing that he tried in the final third paid off before he was substituted.

AMC: Christian Eriksen – 7/10

The Dane had scored three goals in his previous two games and is showing signs of returning to form. His guile was crucial to helping Tottenham unlock a compact Leicester side.

AML: Nacer Chadli – 7/10

Offered nothing until he popped up with Tottenham’s second – a composed finish from Son’s fabulous through ball. Still, goals win games, so the Belgian gets away with it.

ST: Son Heung-Min – 8/10

Tottenham’s man of the match. Bright in the early stages and made it count with a thunderous shot into the top corner. Added to that with a defence-splitting pass to Chadli.

Substitutes

Harry Kane – 7/10

Obvious, I know, but Tottenham are simply a much better side with Kane in the team. Provides them with a physical presence in attack and works so hard to help his midfield.

Josh Onomah – 6/10

The youngster may have been disappointed not to start having put in a decent showing in the original fixture, but got another 20 valuable first-team minutes under his belt.

Dele Alli – N/a

Came on for the final six minutes. Not enough time to impact the game, but he could not help but involve himself with a brave push on Leicester man mountain Marcin Wasilewski!
