Liverpool defender staying put after deal with BPL team falls apart

Reports emerged lately that Liverpool were in discussions with Newcastle United over a possible deal for 30-year-old defender Jose Enrique to return to his old club. But much like John Terry’s future at Stamford Bridge, those talks are now on life support.

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle are not pursuing Enrique despite interest in the Reds defender. Per BBC Sports writer Phil McNulty, Enrique wanted a longer deal than Newcastle were willing to give him.

Prior to his recent injury problems, Enrique was a star defender for Newcastle United from 2007 to 2011 and then for two seasons at Liverpool. Enrique has made less than two dozen appearances for the Reds since the 2013-14 season due to numerous injuries.

Enrique’s only appearances this season have been in the FA Cup. He started Liverpool’s two matches against Exeter and was a late sub against West Ham United this past weekend.
