And Red Devils fans wet themselves with delight on Twitter at the prospect of seeing one of the most decorated players of his generation and his famous personality coming to Old Trafford.

But not everybody got lost in the excitement. One observant Twitter user was quick to point out just what this move to United could mean for Ibrahimovic’s career as it reaches its twilight years.

@TheJoseEra – quite justifiably – believes that Zlatan is resigning himself to a career without winning the Premier League title or, perhaps more significantly, the allusive Champions League.

United have to settle for playing Europa League football next season, and Zlatan is only expected to sign a one-year contract. It will be difficult for Jose Mourinho to deliver the title in that time.

The 34-year-old has a trophy cabinet full of some of the game’s biggest prizes from his time at Inter Milan, AC Milan, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, but the Champions League has escaped him.

And now that he is moving to United, he might never get his hands on it.
