Tottenham handed major transfer boost, but two crucial obstacles in way of swoop for PL star

Tottenham could reportedly move closer to securing an important January signing, but there are still key matters to be sorted out.

It’s claimed by The Express, as per The Gambling Times, that Man Utd boss Jose Mourinho is open to now allowing defender Luke Shaw to leave the club in January.

The 22-year-old has struggled with a series of injury setbacks and poor form since moving to Old Trafford in 2014, and those struggles have continued this season as he’s managed just two brief appearances in the League Cup.

Further, he’s had his problems with Mourinho too, who slammed his attitude last season, as noted by BT Sport, which perhaps made life even more difficult for the former Southampton ace.

In turn, a potential reunion with Mauricio Pochettino has been touted, with the Express adding that Man Utd have held an interest in Danny Rose which could arguably make for a sensible swap deal as it would suit both parties.

It’s unlikely to be that simple though, and before Mourinho is willing to allow Shaw to leave, it’s reported that he wants to find a replacement first as ultimately he can’t continue to find short-term fixes at this level with the likes of Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo all playing in the left-back position since he took charge.

In addition, it’s noted in the report that there is plenty of interest in Shaw and so Tottenham may well have a transfer scrap on their hands, but working with Pochettino again after their successful spell together at Southampton could be a determining factor.

An exit would surely make sense for both Shaw and United, as on a personal level, he’ll hope for a fresh start to get his career back on track and to even stake a late claim for the England squad at next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

If he were to leave though, he would undoubtedly look back on his United career as a major disappointment, and so perhaps that might be motivation in itself to stick it out. Based on this report though, it sounds as though he’s edging closer to an exit.
