Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger hopeful of ruining Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United transfer plans

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is reportedly still holding out some hope that he can keep hold of star player and Manchester United transfer target Mesut Ozil.

The Germany international is yet to sign a new deal at the Emirates Stadium, and will be out of contract next summer and able to make a free transfer wherever he chooses.

According to the Daily Mirror, United boss Jose Mourinho remains keen on the 29-year-old, but Arsenal are preparing to make him another offer as they believe interest in him has not been that strong.

Ozil has been at Arsenal since 2013, and despite dividing opinion among Gunners supporters, has shown himself to be one of the finest creative players in Europe in that time.

Many have doubts over his work rate and big-game influence, but with the Mirror also reporting that Arsenal are giving up on keeping fellow contract rebel Alexis Sanchez, they cannot afford to lose another big name.

For all Ozil’s flaws, the former Real Madrid man staying on at Arsenal would prevent a potential disaster for the club next summer as they face being dealt the blow of having to rebuild almost their entire attack.

The Mirror lists Lyon star Nabil Fekir as a potential replacement for the duo, but it would surely take two or even three signings to replicate what the pair have brought to the team in recent seasons.
