10 worst Premier League signings of the season: Chelsea dominate list of duds, plus Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool flops

3) Tiemoue Bakayoko (Chelsea)

What a mess. Around £40million spent on a player who looked pretty great at Monaco, but who has been shown up as being well out of his depth at Premier League level.

Chelsea have done a disastrous job of replacing Nemanja Matic in midfield, and you could argue Bakayoko is probably a downgrade on someone like Nathaniel Chalobah too.

Quite what went wrong at Chelsea this summer is beyond us, but it could cost Antonio Conte his job.

2) Alvaro Morata (Chelsea)

The fourth Chelsea player on this list and surely the most disappointing of the lot is club record signing Alvaro Morata, who has looked like the next Fernando Torres for most of his time with the Blues so far.

The Spain international has just one goal in 2018 and is starting to show why he was only ever a squad player at previous club Real Madrid.

Given that Chelsea bizarrely axed one of the best strikers in Europe in Diego Costa last summer, Morata’s arrival looks all the more baffling and like a big, big mistake.

1) Alexis Sanchez (Manchester United)

There can only be one for first place and that’s Manchester United’s ill-thought-out January purchase of Alexis Sanchez.

The Chile international shone at Arsenal but his weaknesses showed as he sulked his way through the first half of this season.

Sanchez is now struggling to settle at all in a United shirt and it comes across more and more like the Red Devils just wanted the satisfaction of landing another big name, with the added bonus of not letting Pep Guardiola and Manchester City get him.
