Brazilian winger Willian was awarded the captain’s armband for Chelsea’s final pre-season match against Lyon at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.

Maurizio Sarri made a number of changes to his line-up as he prepares for his first Premier League game in charge this weekend when the Blues take on Huddersfield.

With that in mind, Willian emerged as one of the more senior players in the starting XI, and was given the armband against the Ligue 1 outfit.

Willian, who turns 30 on Thursday, has been linked with an exit this summer with Barcelona amongst the clubs paired with an interest, as per BBC Sport. The Brazilian international bagged 13 goals and 12 assists last season though, and so perhaps he has an important role to play for Sarri this year regardless of the speculation.

With the uncertainty over his future coupled with his controversial Instagram post last season which mocked former boss Antonio Conte, as noted by the Metro, he doesn’t quite seem like captain material.

In turn, it led to the reaction below from some Chelsea fans who were far from impressed with the decision from Sarri, as evidently Willian’s off-the-field antics haven’t sat well some sections of supporters who believe he wasn’t deserving of it.

Time will tell if his performances this season can turn their opinion and silence his critics with or without the armband.
