Manchester United and Chelsea make contact over transfer of Champions League winner

Manchester United and Chelsea have reportedly both enquired about the potential transfer of Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic.

According to Sport, the Premier League giants are among the Croatia international’s suitors as his Barcelona future looks in some doubt due to no progress being made over a new contract for him at the Nou Camp.

Rakitic has been one of the finest midfielders in Europe in recent years, playing a key role in Barca’s famous 2014/15 treble win, most notably with the opening goal in the Champions League final win over Juventus.

The 30-year-old could certainly be a fine fit for Man Utd right now as Fred has flopped since joining the club in the summer, while Marouane Fellaini’s January departure also leaves them a little light in that area.

For Chelsea, Rakitic could be an ideal replacement for Cesc Fabregas after his January move to Monaco, and could even be an upgrade on players like struggling duo Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic.
