“The best business this club has ever done” – Klopp praised for Liverpool transfer masterstroke

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has praised Jurgen Klopp for overseeing one of the best pieces of business the club has ever done in the transfer market.

In January 2018, the Reds were dealt what looked at the time like being a major blow as Philippe Coutinho left Anfield for a big move to Barcelona.

The Brazil international had been a star performer for Liverpool and his departure looked a big loss, though in that same transfer window they reinvested the money from his sale on signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.

Then that summer, Liverpool followed it up with a move for goalkeeper Alisson, whose arrival at the club has also been hugely instrumental to the team’s new-found success.

Coutinho, meanwhile, has barely been missed and has in fact struggled badly to get to top form during his time at Barcelona, having also struggled on loan at Bayern Munich this season.

Needless to say, Souness believes these deals were a key moment in the Klopp era, with the German tactician helping Liverpool become Champions League winners last season and Premier League champions this term.

“When you say what’s the most important signing, I think you can look back to when Liverpool went from a good team to a great team,” Souness said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“They sold Coutinho and got £160million or whatever it was, they got Alisson and they got Van Dijk and still had change left over.

“That’s got to be the best business this club has ever done.”
