Exclusive: Stan Collymore weighs in on Arsenal’s title chances

After losing just one game all season, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table.

On course to win their first title since Arsene Wenger was in charge back in 2004, the Gunners are having one of their best-ever seasons so far.

Although there is still a long way to go, there is no doubt that the Gunners are very much in this year’s title race and currently seven points clear of six-time winners Manchester City, the second half of the season is going to be a mouth-watering race to the finish.

However, despite their advantageous position, former Aston Villa attacker Stan Collymore has major doubts over the Londoners’ ability to see out the campaign.

“They’ve ticked every box so far,” Collymore said in an exclusive interview.

“The key components of any season are starting well, managing the festive period well and how you do in your final run-in. So far, Arsenal have managed every hurdle excellently. They’re playing very well and they’re winning games without their main attacker – Gabriel Jesus.

Gabriel Jesus is not expected to return for Arsenal until the end of February.

“The only problem for them is their run-in, it plays with your mind. When you can see the potential reward of all your hard work it is very different from how you feel at any other time in the season.”

Going on to speak about the Gunners’ most recent 4-2 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on New Year’s Eve, Collymore admitted to agreeing with several pundits who are still backing Man City to win the title, despite their London rivals being seven points clear at the top of the table.

“I saw all three of Sky Sports’ pundits, Graeme Souness, Jamie Redknapp and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink still backing Manchester City for the title and I’m going to agree because they’ve for a free-scoring striker and a free-scoring midfield, as well as a bench capable of winning any game,” the ex-Villa attacker added.

“Not only that but the reintroduction of European football is going to add so much more pressure that it may well play into City’s hands.

“However, make no mistake, if Arsenal can find a way to just keep on grinding out results and they do go on to lift their first league title since 2004 then they could very well take Liverpool’s place and become City’s closest rivals for many seasons to come.”
