“Got to do better” – West Ham man stunned by David de Gea following Man Utd clash

West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has given his reaction to the mistake made by Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, which led to the Hammers taking all three points last Sunday.

It was the Jamaican international who battled with Luke Shaw to allow Said Benrahma to break through, his shot should’ve been easily collected by the Red Devils stopper. However, he was only able to get a hand to it and the ball rolled into the back of the net.

The 32-year-old has now made four errors which have led to a goal this season across all competitions, which is the joint-highest in the Premier League alongside Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris.

Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Antonio was asked what his reaction was to the howler by De Gea at the time.

He stated, “I can’t slate the man,

“I don’t really want to slate the man. But De Gea has got to do better.

“I don’t understand, he is such a good keeper. But he has these moments, I feel so bad for the guy. He was up there as one of the best keepers in the world, even though he is up there, he still has these crazy moments.

“That goal, it was so slow. When I saw the shot I thought ‘he is just going to collect this’.”

The number of mistakes made by De Gea this season will certainly have manager Erik ten Hag thinking about the possibility of buying a new goalkeeper this summer.

He’s said to have agreed on a new deal according to a recent report, but it also stated that there’s no certainty that he will be the Man United number one next season.

Questions are certainly being raised about whether or not the Spanish stopper can keep up with the modern game, due to his lack of ability with his feet and dropping the odd howler on occasion.

His performance this past weekend certainly doesn’t help his case.
