Why Liverpool should keep Peter Crouch
by Jon on June 17th, 2008With rumours of an imminent move to Portsmouth/Aston Villa on the cards for Peter Crouch, COS looks at the career of Liverpool’s lankiest striker and asks, is Rafa an idiot to let such a prolific goalscorer leave?
Standing just over two metres in his socks, Peter Crouch is known throughout British football as having a “good touch for a big man”.
It’s not all just touch though, as the 27-year-old forward has bagged 42 goals in 127 appearances for the club in his three seasons at Anfield. Not a bad return, eh?
Crouch arrived on Merseyside in the summer of summer of 2005, signing for 7 million from Southampton. Unfortunately, Crouch got off to a dreadful start at Liverpool, struggling to score in 19 games.
The goal drought ended, though, when Crouch finally scored against Wigan Athletic in early December.
After that, things took off for Crouch and he ended the season as the man who knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup, scoring in the fifth-round tie to give Liverpool their first victory in the Cup over the Mancs since the war.
Having ended the season with an FA Cup Winners medal, Crouch picked up where he’d left off and scored the winning goal in the club’s 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield at the start of the 2006-07 campaign.
Despite struggling with injury for part of the season - Crouch suffered a broken nose against Sheffield United in February and was out of the side for over a month recovering from surgery – Crouch finished up as Liverpool’s top goalscorer for the season with 18 goals in just 31 appearances - including 7 in the Champions League.
He’d also firmly established himself as an important member of the England squad.
The arrival of Fernando Torres at the start of the 2007-08 campaign effectively reduced Crouch to a bit-part role at Anfield, and he has struggled to make the first team, making only 17 appearances. Nevertheless, Crouch still managed to bag a total of 11 goals in all competitions last season, which is pretty good, given the amount of time he spent on the bench.
Understandably, Crouch has been frustrated at being left out of the first team and, with one year left on his contract, it has been widely reported that he is pushing for a move out of Anfield.
But shouldn’t Benitez be fighting to keep Crouch? Won’t Liverpool miss the different options he brings to the side? Yes, Torres is a proven top-flight goalscorer, but none of the other strikers at Liverpool have come close to Crouch’s record.
Bottom line: Is Rafa an idiot to let Crouch go? And if he does sell him, who will replace him?

To Whichever idiot wrote this article.
Rafa Benitez doesn’t have a choice Crouch has to go now or we lose a lot of money. He has refused to sign a new contract, is dictating to the manager as to when he should play and has threatened to warm the bench for a season and then leave on a Bosnanan. What’s Rafa to do, you lot think your so clever, come on tell us.

I say sell him and get another Voronin so we are completely screwed if Torres gets injured. There has been NO talk of signing a striker this summer! Its all about midfielders and defenders. We only have 1 class striker after crouch leaves. we need at least two other strikers to fill the gap that voronin and crouch will leave. We will only have kuyt and torres if they are both sold!

I can’t understand why Liverpool wanna get rid of Crouch….strange!
jimmers - June 17th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
rafa handled the whole crouch thing badly and now he has to sell him. crouch is right to want to leave. he was treated badly and wasnt used enough last season. now he doesnt want to sign a new contract because he wants to play football, not sit on the bench. he is worth more than the papers seem to be saying but the facts are he hasnt been playing, he wants to leave and his contract is nearly up. now we will have to sell him cheap. someone will get a bargain on him and I will be sorry to see him go

I think Crouch is a great player get rid of Voronin hes lazy. Then the money that we get from him(which wont be a lot) by David Villa and play a 4-33 with Crouch Torres and Crouch up front.Villa has admitted that he wants to play for liverpool with his Spanish teammateS imagine that villa and torres up front we would have the best strike partnership in the world ne1 agree?send me an email

Bottom line is, Crouch isn’t clinical enough and doesn’t bring enough to the team in other ways. If you want to win the Premiership your main striker needs to either score a shitload of goals (Torres, Adebayor) or be an amazing all-round player (Rooney, Drogba 04-06). Crouch is neither of these, so he’s good enough to be a first teamer in a club wanting to finish 3rd-4th, or a squad player in a team challenging for the title.
Crouch has decided he’d rather player regular football for a UEFA Cup team than occasional football for a Champions League team. There’s nothing wrong with that, but to criticise Benitez for getting rid of someone who’s not good enough for our first team is ludicrous.
If you think he’s good enough, why are no Champions League clubs bidding for him?…

Mr Adam…
this is an extract from david villa’s interview with goal.com…Im showing this basically to rubbish your statement that villa WANTS to join Liverpool….
it goes as folllows….
“I have heard that I am supposed to have said that I would prefer to go to Liverpool to play next season or that I want Chelsea to be my next team,I have not said anything like that. My club insists I am not for sale and, believe me, I am totally focused on the European Championship.
As far as I know, nobody from Liverpool has been in touch, but in any case my future is not something I have in my mind at the moment. I do not understand why people put words in my mouth.”
So wake up dude… n stop makin such lousy statements…

THE QUESTION HAS TO BE ASKED , WHY DONT ANY OTHER BIG TEAMS WANT CROUCH , IF THEY DONT,,, WHY SHOULD WE , IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT ,THIS IS AN IMPORTANT TIME OF THE SEASON , WHERE WE USE OUR HEADS AND NOT OUR HEARTS TO THINK , AND LETS FACE IT , HE AINT GOOD ENOUGH FOR A TOP FOUR TEAM ,PLEASE GET RID OF ,CROUCH, VORRONIN,KEWELL,PENNANT, MAKES ME WANT TO CRY WHEN I SEE THEM IN A LIVERPOOL SKIPPER

Does the one who article know that torres in 1 season has socored nearly as much as crouch has scored in 3 seasons?
We don’t need crouch, especially if rafa finds a young talanted striker.
