Tottenham are to step-up their interest in West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame according to the Daily Star.

The 24 year old Senegal international is available for just £3.5m due to a release clause inserted into his Hammers contract and this has led to a great deal of interest in the former Wigan Athletic man.

Andre Villas-Boas must beat local rivals Arsenal if he is to win the race for the tough tackling box to box performer with the Portuguese boss eager to sign Diame to replace Brazilian Sandro who is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy is in talks with the player’s representatives and hopes to lure the midfielder from East to North London this month.

Tottenham had hoped to bring in German international Lewis Holtby early, having already agreed to bring the Schalke man in at the end of the season, but the Bundesliga side have rejected the club’s opening offer to do so.
