Reading players were reportedly informed of the sacking of boss Brian McDermott via text message sent by the Premier League club according to the Daily Mail.

The Royals board elected to sack McDermott despite the fact that he has helped the Berkshire side back into the Premier League and after 13 years service at the Madejeski Stadium.

Though Reading are in the relegation zone they are by no means doomed, sitting just four points from safety with nine games still to play.

Former Swindon Town manager Paolo Di Canio is favourite to take the job.

The eccentric Italian was at Reading’s home match with Aston Villa and this merely heightened the speculation that the former West Ham star is the man billionaire owner Russian Anton Zingarevich has in mind to replace McDermott.

Reading play Man United and Arsenal away in their next two fixtures and then take on Liverpool and Southampton in a run of games that could well determine whether the club stays in the top flight.
