Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is set to extend his stay in La Liga according to talkSport.

The young stopper has been attracting praise from a number of sources this season as he continues to put in some impressive performances between the Atletico sticks.

Spanish newspaper AS are reporting that the two clubs have agreed an extension in principle, meaning the Belgian is set to stay at the Vicente Calderon until June 2014. The paperwork is reported to have been drawn up and will be signed in the forthcoming days.

Thibaut Courtois has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in recent months but Chelsea are reportedly keen to hang onto the player.

They may find that difficult though with Courtois’ path to the Chelsea first-team currently blocked by Czech goalkeeper Peter Cech.

Chelsea were rumoured to be planning on sending out Courtois on loan to a Premier League club but they have now decided the player would benefit from experiencing Champions League football.

Courtois is widely popular amongst the club’s fans and management after setting a new record on Sunday by going 820 minutes without conceding a goal. Atletico manager Diego Simeone was reportedly desperate to ensure the club retaine Courtois’ services for another year.
