Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino is confident that the club will be able to keep hold of star youngster Luke Shaw, according to the Daily Mirror.

The Argentine coach may be expecting a flood of offers to come in this summer for the young left-back, who has had a great first season in Southampton’s first team at the age of just 17.

Drawing comparisons to Tottenham star and former Saint Gareth Bale, Shaw has been watched by Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea this season, who are all said to be weighing up offers for the talented defender.

However, Pochettino laughed off these rumours, and was keen to focus on planning for players to bring in next season, in order to help the club climb the Premier League table.

Asked if Shaw would still be at the club, the manager said: “For sure. Perhaps we will go and get some Chelsea players ourselves!

“From tomorrow, we will start working and planning for next season.

“It is clear that when a manager starts from the beginning [of a season], he will be able to transmit the brand of football he wants. That makes it much easier.

“There is one clear thing – next season we want to be a lot higher than we are today.”

Southampton finished in a very respectable 14th place in their first season back in the top flight since 2005, and have been linked with a number of Spanish-based players in this summer’s transfer market due to Pochettino’s La Liga connections.
