New Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is determined to hang onto star striker Edinson Cavani despite heighten speculation that the player may leave for Real Madrid.

Goal.com reports that Beintez is set to begin his reign at Napoli and is looking forward to taking the club to the next stage of their development.

The Spaniard feels that will be much easier if Cavani is at the club.

The striker is currently playing for Uruguay in the Confederations Cup and has said that he won’t decide his future until after the competition.

Benitez is confident that he can keep the Uruguayan at the club and has already had a conversation with the striker.

“Everybody talks about him because he’s very strong and he’s an important player. We’re happy he is with us for now and I hope he can remain here,” Benitez said at a press conference.

Real Madrid are said to front-runners for the strikers signature and reports have suggested that the Spanish giants have already held talks with Cavani’s representatives.

However, Napoli have made it clear that they won’t accept bids below £53 million, which is the amount that triggers Cavani’s release clause in his contract.

Chelsea and Manchester City are also said to be interested in the striker although both clubs are reluctant to pay the asking price.
