The race for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney looks set to hot up after it appeared that Arsenal threw their hat into the ring according to The Daily Mail.

The England star is looking increasingly likely to leave the club in the coming months after a very public falling out with the club.

The final straw for Rooney is understood to have been manager David Moyes’ comments, suggesting Rooney was second-choice to Robin Van Persie.

Rooney believes himself to be at the peak of his talents and is in no mood to be play second fiddle to anybody, especially in a year leading up to the World Cup.

Chelsea are known to be interested in Rooney with boss Jose Mourinho a long-term admirer of the striker.

But the Stamford Bridge side have been so far unsuccessful in their attempts to negotiate a fee with the Premier League champions.

Arsenal are keen to make a marquee signing this summer after years of frugality while they paid of the debt they accumulated building the Emirates Stadium.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has insisted that Rooney is not out of their financial reach, despite the player currently commanding a pay packet thought to be in the region of £200,000 a week.
