Crystal Palace are set to increase their chase of Aston Villa striker Darren Bent by offering to pay £40,000 of his weekly salary in a bid to help him help them stay in the top flight, the Mirror reports.

The initial bid would be to take the 29-year-old on loan for the season, with the Eagles footing the majority of the bill for his humongous wages and even throwing Villa a survival bonus if he helps to keep them in the Premier League.

Palace will then negotiate a permanent deal, should all parties be happy to do so, next summer to keep the player at Selhurst Park should they manage to beat the drop.

Villa are increasingly interested in selling Bent following on from a disappointing campaign from the striker last season, but so far both Newcastle and Fulham have failed to come up with a deal that Paul Lambert’s men are happy with.

Bent’s wages were reportedly too high for the Magpies, whilst Fulham didn’t want to commit so much money to a single deal.

Palace, however, are willing to take the temporary financial hit if it means Premier League survival in the long run and Ian Holloway is still desperate to add to his front line despite recently landing Marouane Chamakh from Arsenal.
