Australian side Melbourne Victory have confirmed they are also in talks with veteran defender William Gallas over a move down under, Sky Sports reports.

The A-League club have an open spot for a marquee signing this season and head coach Ange Postecoglou believes the former French international would be the “right fit” for the club, but admitted that talks are still in an early stage and far from being completed.

“I think with players like William Gallas you can never say whether you are close or not,” he was quoted as saying on foxsports.com.au.

“Would we be interested? Yes, of course. We’ve got a marquee spot to fill before the season and it’s got to be the right fit for us.”

The news will come as bad news for Palace boss Ian Holloway, though, as he looks to add more top flight experience to his squad after watching the side crash out of the Capital One Cup to minnows Bristol City earlier this week.

Gallaas is thought to be keen on finding a new experience after being released by Tottenham at the end of last season and it is the ex-Arsenal man’s leadership ability that has attracted Postecoglou.

“We’ve got a really young group and part of what I’m looking for in a marquee player is some real experience and some leadership as well,” he added.
